The 05B Legends traveled to Hayward this past weekend to participate in the Alliance FC Copa Classico Tournament. The boys battled high temperatures and good competition all weekend, and also came home with a bit of hardware.
The boys started Saturday against Sentinels SC, and dominated the match from start to finish for a 7-0 shut out. Junior Picon led the way with a hat trick, Josue Pantoja scored 2 goals, and Ugo Opara and Ernesto Martinez each added a goal to close out the scoring. The boys finished Saturday with another win against the Mersey SC Warriors. Trey Steinhorst, Gabriel Dimas and Picon all got on the board to give the boys a 3-1 victory.
Sunday's match put the boys against Barcelona Bay Area. Picon continued his scoring rampage by notching two goals, and the Legends' midfielders and back line were solid in a 2-0 shut out, which locked the boys into the championship match.
In the final on Sunday against the host Alliance FC Diablos, the first half was tense, and scoreless. In the second half Junior Picon broke the tie with an assist from Ugo Opara to give the team a 1-0 lead. Opara then decided to take matters into his own hands and found the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage. The Diablos scored on a penalty kick late in the 2nd half, but it was not enough and the boys held on for a 2-1 final and the championship title.
The front line of Picon, Opara, Pantoja, Steinhorst, and Eduardo Velador scored 14 goals over 4 games and were aggressive and active the entire weekend. Midfielders Brandon Saucedo, Ernesto Martinez, and Gabriel Dimas controlled the middle of the field and connected well with the forwards to create plenty of scoring chances. The back line of Bryan Rincon, Jacob Stokes, Jacob Zavalza, Diego Avila, and Alexander Aceves worked well together and only conceded 2 goals the entire weekend. They also did a great job of protecting and supporting keepers Luis Rodriguez, and Cristian Lopez.
Head coach Robert Olson and assistant Oscar Santos were pleased with the weekend results, but know it's a long season and there's plenty of room for this talented team to grow.
