In their first tournament as a newly formed team, 08G Pride started off the season right by winning the American River Independence Cup Tournament. The girls battled 100 degree temperatures and some tough competition to earn the right to be tournament champions.
The girls opened Saturday against the host American River side, and behind a hat trick from Eliana, dominated the match for a 7-0 shut out. Lilly chipped in with two goals, and Dulce and Stella each added a goal to close out the scoring. The girls completed the Saturday sweep with another shut out of Elk Grove FC. Eliana got on the board with a PK, and Stella added insurance to give the girls a 2-0 victory.
Sunday put the girls against a tough Rocklin FC side, who handed the girls their only defeat of the weekend. Stella again found the back of the net, but it wasn't enough in a 2-1 defeat. However, by virtue of their performance to that point, the girls earned a trip to the final for a rematch with Rocklin.
In the final, Rocklin jumped out early for a 1-0 lead, but Eliana equalized late in the 1st half to tie the match going into the break. Rocklin made it extremely tough on the girls and again grabbed the lead 2-1 late in the 2nd half. As they did all weekend, the Pride girls dug deep and responded as Eliana once again brought the girls even, scoring off of a beautiful assist from Mariann. The 2nd half ended tied, and both teams would go to PK's to settle things.
In PK's, Pride goalkeeper Gisele came up big with two saves to deny Rocklin's last chances of capturing the match, and gave the Pride girls a hard earned tournament crown. Led by head coach Jorge Villasenor Sr., this well coached and talented group of girls are only scratching the surface of their potential. Certainly expect more success and tournament crowns in 2018 from this fun to watch group.
