Fresh off their Champions Cup title, the 03 Freedom girls traveled to Santa Clara to take on host Sporting Santa Clara in a CRL league match.
In a tough, physical match, the two teams went into the half scoreless, with neither able to create good scoring chances. In the 2nd half, mid-fielders Nela Taeb, Paulina Gutierrez and Hailey Hamataka began to control the middle of the field which allowed forward Madison Del Prado to get loose and put the girls ahead 1-0. However, Sporting quickly struck back with a header off a set piece to even the game at 1-1.
Forwards Briana Garcia, Lauren Yee, Kierra East, Rachel Guzman, and Del Prado then turned up the heat and began to put heavy pressure on the Sporting back line. East, who did a great job of filling the void for injured forward Kaya Scott, knocked in a beautiful Del Prado assist past the Sporting keeper to give the girls a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
The back line of Jayden Sanders, Lilli Ruiz, Sanam Sharifi, Chloee Ironside, and keeper McKenzie Maggiore shut the door on Sporting's last gasp attempts to tie the match to give the girls the 2-1 victory. The win over Sporting also pushed the girls to 2-0 in CRL league play.
The girls take a 3 week break from competition and resume league play October 21st at home against California Odyssey.
