They did it again. The Freedom girls continued on their impressive tournament run by taking the Monarcas Champions Cup tournament this past weekend in Manteca. The girls have participated in 12 tournaments thus far in 2017, and have been either a finalist, or the champion in 7 of them.
The girls outlasted some tough competition over the weekend, and advanced to face a familiar foe in IR Academy in the final. The match was tense, with both teams being evenly matched and in games such as these, one play, break, or mistake usually makes the difference. After ending regulation time scoreless, that one play came in golden goal overtime. Forward Madison Del Prado made a great run and placed a shot on goal which was met with an equally great save by the IR keeper. However, forward Kaya Scott read the play beautifully and was in position to knock in the rebound to win the match and give the girls the tournament crown.
Forwards Kierra East, Briana Garcia, Lauren Yee, and Cassidy Pease played well, while mid-fielders Nela Taeb, Hailey Hamataka, and Paulina Gutierrez were effective in controlling the middle of the field. Defenders Jayden Sanders, Rachel Guzman, Sanam Sharifi, Lilli Ruiz and Taylor Khalil were solid and provided support for keeper McKenzie Maggiore.
The girls resume CRL fall league play Saturday in Santa Clara against Santa Clara Sporting.
